The picture is of my 4 year old Sofia. She just graduated class of 2008 from Kindercare! Big deal right? Well, I recently had the pleasure of giving a lecture to the ASU Summer Broadcast Institute under the supervision of Dr. Craig Allen. This program is designed for high school students who are interested in the field of Mass Communications. I have been doing this lecture for the past 4 years now. As I walk on campus and into the Walter Cronkite School of journalism and Mass Communication area, I feel a bit nervous. I mean, this is where a lot of “pros” have started their craft in broadcast journalism, radio, print, you name it. Now, I am speaking to the new generation of “young minds” who want to step into the same field I have been in since college. But everything is different. Technology is different. Business is different. Information gathering is different. SCHOOL is different. I have long thought about stepping into the classroom again. Not as a student, but as a teacher. To give back. To enlighten. To help people grow. I wonder who learns more, the students I speak to, or me? Every year their questions are more detailed and complex. That’s exciting. I have learned that I have much to learn. And as I give my lectures, I walk away that much smarter about what I do and what I love. I also wonder what they will be teaching and HOW they will be teaching it when my 4 year old Sofia heads to college. I can only hope that there is as much to offer and more. Maybe I can give a lecture to her class. For that, I would be grateful.
